Grasscloth Installation
Reading these posts about grasscloth makes us want to get a few rolls and cover some walls today! The textures and colors are so inspiring.
Still, we realize that despite all the great characteristics of grasscloth wallpaper, it can be tricky to hang.
Here are the basic steps you need to take to successfully hang grasscloth:
- 1) Clean the walls really well and allow them time to dry.
2) Apply a good quality primer that’s made specifically for wallcovering. It’s worth it. Trust us!
3) Lay the grasscloth face down on a clean, flat surface and apply the adhesive paste evenly to the back. Following the manufacturers’ instructions, wait the recommended amount of time for the adhesive to become tacky before hanging the grasscloth.
4) Place the first piece of grasscloth on the wall, starting from the top. Give yourself about an inch of extra paper to allow for trimming later. Also, using small staples to hold the paper to wall while you get started is OK (you’ll remove them later). This is a step you’d never get away with using vinyl paper, but the texture of the grasscloth completely hides the holes!
5) Smooth the top portion of the grasscloth gently using a dry sponge. Don’t use a wallpaper smoother…it could damage the fibers of the wallpaper.
6) Continue to the process in the same manner, pasting, trimming, and hanging one strip of grasscloth at a time until the entire area is covered.
7) Go back and carefully trim excess paper from top & bottom, then remove staples once adhesive is dry.
Keep in mind that with grasscloth, seams are visible! It’s just the nature of the paper…the lines will not ever match up perfectly.
Start by covering an accent wall instead of papering the entire room. It’ll give you a chance to practice on a smaller area!
